The Housing Authority acquired this decommissioned fire station from the City of Santa Barbara in 1989 and, through extensive remodeling, an extensive remodel changed an existing fire station into a dormitory style living facility to be used as a transitional housing and life training facility for families transitioning from homelessness into the community’s workforce and rental market. The City provided a grant of $186,624 from Community Development Block Grant funds to assist with the remodeling. The Firehouse has five private family rooms and communal dining room and living room. It has a conditional use permit allowing occupancy up to 19 persons.The Housing Authority has leased the Firehouse from the onset to Transition House, who operates the facility as transitional housing for its formerly homeless client families.
