Artisan Court Construction to Affect Traffic
Public Housing Project Underway
Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Construction of the Artisan Court public housing project is expected to cause minor traffic disruptions on lower Cota Street, according to a press release issued by the Santa Barbara Housing Authority. The south sidewalk near the 420 East Cota Street property (now a vacant lot hosting garden plots) will be closed beginning today as trucks bring loads of soil onto the site. //
The delivery of soil, to continue through next week, and the driving of piles, which is to commence on May 7, will cause noise and vibrations in the surrounding neighborhood, the press release noted.
Further noise will result from installation of the project’s foundation in mid-May, and drilling for an elevator, which will start at the end of this month.
The newest public housing project in Santa Barbara, Artisan Court is intended to accommodate young people transitioning out of foster homes, as well as low-income workers and the formerly homeless.
The 55-unit apartment complex is scheduled to open in January of next year.
